Essential Question

How can we apply our mathematical knowledge to creative writing and art?

Project Overview

A collection of student short stories inspired by The Number Devil: A Mathematical Adventure. Students will gain an understanding of various mathematical concepts (including Fibonacci numbers, squares and square roots, Pascal’s Triangle, combinations and permutations, irrational numbers, and two and three dimensional geometry) through short story writing. Students will engage in all steps of the writing process, from pre-writing to publishing and will hone their short story writing skills. The final product will include a published mathematical short story including cover art and illustrations.

Student Products

  • Math Adventures. After reading each chapter in math class, students will complete twelve math “adventures” to explore and reinforce the mathematical concepts from that chapter.

  • Mathematical Short Story.  In humanities, students will write a creative short story that includes one or more math concepts.

  • Cover Art and Illustrations. In multimedia, students will use various computer programs to design their short story covers using a tessellation of their main character and any illustrations for their short story.

Exhibition

Students will present their final published short stories, evidence of their revision process, and chapter guides at the HTMMA Author’s Night on Thursday, October 18th from 5:30-7pm.
